Slender West Lake, located in Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province, is a AAAAA-level scenic area and a World Cultural Heritage site. It's not a wide lake, but rather a long, winding, 4.3-kilometer-long waterway, renowned for its "slenderness," blending the elegance of southern China with the grandeur of northern China. Key attractions include the Long Causeway with its willows in spring, Xu Garden, Little Gold Hill, Fishing Terrace (offering stunning views), Five Pavilion Bridge (a landmark), White Pagoda, Xichun Terrace, and the Twenty-Four Bridges. A visit of 3-5 hours is recommended. The best seasons are spring (March-May, when cherry blossoms, peach blossoms, and magnolias are in full bloom) and autumn (September-November, when the weather is crisp and the colors are vibrant).
By Air: Take the airport express from Yangzhou Taizhou Airport to Yangzhou West District City Terminal (40 RMB). The South Gate is about 800 meters from the airport, or you can take a taxi for 3 kilometers. By High-Speed Rail/Train: Exit from Yangzhou Station or Yangzhou East Station and take the tourist bus (Tourist Route 1) directly to all gates of the scenic area; a taxi ride costs approximately 22 RMB and covers 9.3 kilometers. By City Bus: Multiple bus routes reach "Slender West Lake Station"—Tourist bus, Route 5, Route 11, Route 39, etc., are available at the West Gate; Tourist bus, Route 25, etc., are available at the East/North Gate. Taxi fares start at 9 RMB/3 kilometers. Recommended route: Enter from the South Gate and exit from the North Gate, avoiding backtracking. For the best experience, consider a combination of walking and boating—a painted boat (50 RMB/person, with commentary) or a rowing boat (80 RMB/person, with the boatwoman singing Yangzhou folk songs). The experience is better between 6 and 8 a.m. when there are fewer people and the lighting is better during the day, creating a richer and more varied atmosphere.
The scenic area features primarily walking trails, with some sections accessible by electric carts. Restrooms and mother-and-baby rooms are available at multiple locations. Visitor centers at each entrance offer convenient services such as luggage storage, wheelchair, cane, and stroller rentals, as well as mobile phone charging. Restaurants, convenience stores, vending machines, and souvenir shops are available within the scenic area—the "Slender West Lake Souvenirs" cultural and creative shop sells refrigerator magnets, postcards, tea sets, and other unique souvenirs. Additionally, pleasure boats, rowboats, and sightseeing buses (20 yuan/one way) are available for transportation.
