Why Visit Early?
The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding is best experienced in the early morning. Pandas are most active during their 8-9 AM feeding time, after which they typically nap for most of the day. Arriving at opening time (7:30 AM) ensures you see playful pandas rather than sleeping ones.

From Chengdu City Center:
- Metro + Shuttle: Take Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue Station, then free shuttle bus (30 minutes total)
- Taxi/Didi: ¥40-60 from downtown, 30-45 minutes depending on traffic
- Tourist Bus: Departs from major hotels
Tickets:
- Regular: ¥55
- Book online via WeChat mini-program "成都大熊猫繁育研究基地" to skip ticket queues
Recommended Route (3-4 hours)
Phase 1: Adult Pandas (7:30-9:00 AM)
Start at Moon Nursery (月亮产房)
Head directly here first. This is where you'll find the youngest cubs, especially from August-November after the breeding season. The tiny pink newborns and fluffy cubs are the main attraction.
Continue to Sun Nursery (太阳产房)
Another nursery facility with young pandas. Cubs under one year old are kept in incubator rooms visible through glass windows.
Phase 2: Feeding Time (9:00-10:00 AM)
Adult Panda Enclosures
Walk to the adult panda areas to watch feeding time. Keepers distribute fresh bamboo, and this is when pandas are most photogenic - sitting upright and munching contentedly.
Key Enclosures:
- Enclosure 1 & 2: Most reliable for active adults
- Panda Villa: Naturalistic habitat with climbing structures
Phase 3: Explore Further (10:00-11:30 AM)
Red Panda Zone
Don't miss the red pandas (lesser pandas). These adorable creatures are often more active than their giant cousins and are excellent for photos.
Swan Lake & Bamboo Forest
Take the scenic walking path through bamboo groves. The peaceful environment gives insight into panda habitat.
Panda Kitchen
Watch staff prepare panda food - each adult eats 30-40kg of bamboo daily!
