Zhujiajiao Ancient Town

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, located in Qingpu District, Shanghai, is a Jiangnan water town with a history of over 1700 years, often referred to as the "Venice of Shanghai." The town's main streets are open all day free of charge, although some internal attractions (such as Kezhi Garden and the Qing Dynasty Post Office) require separate tickets. A visit of 3 to 5 hours is recommended. Spring and autumn (March to May and September to November) offer pleasant weather and are the best seasons to visit. Visitors can stroll along North Street, sample local delicacies like Grandma's Zongzi (sticky rice dumplings) and Zha Rou (braised pork), climb the Fang Sheng Bridge for panoramic views of the water town, and take a traditional rowing boat ride through the canals to experience the unique charm of a Jiangnan water town.

Take Shanghai Metro Line 17 to "Zhujiajiao Station," exit from Exit 1. From the metro station, there are several options to reach the ancient town: walk approximately 1.6 kilometers (15-20 minutes); take an electric wooden boat (ticket price 40 yuan, approximately 20 minutes) directly to the Fang Sheng Bridge Wharf; or transfer to bus routes 1510 or Zhujiajiao 1 to the Visitor Center. Alternatively, from the city center, you can take the Shanghai-Zhujiajiao Expressway or Shanghai-Zhujiajiao Special Line to Zhujiajiao Bus Station. If driving, navigate to "Zhujiajiao Ancient Town Parking Lot," parking fee is approximately 20 yuan/day, about a 1-hour drive from the city center. Recommended itinerary: First, take panoramic photos of the landmark Fang Sheng Bridge, then stroll along Beida Street to sample local snacks, visit the Jiangnan-style gardens of Kezhi Garden in the afternoon, and finally take a traditional rowing boat through the waterways. The ancient town is small; the entire journey is approximately 1.6 kilometers on foot.

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town is primarily paved with bluestone slabs. The roads are generally smooth, but some sections are narrow, and several stone bridges require steps to ascend or descend. The visitor center offers guided tours, free maps, wheelchair rentals, strollers, luggage storage, mobile phone charging, and emergency medical services. The town has 17 tourist restrooms, many of which meet Class A standards and are equipped with barrier-free facilities, accessible restrooms, and baby changing tables—all family-friendly amenities. North Street is lined with numerous gift shops and food stalls where you can purchase traditional handicrafts and local delicacies.
