No. 6, Gaomiao Road, Shiwan Town, Chancheng District, Foshan City, Guangdong Province
Nanfeng Ancient Kiln is one of the oldest and best-preserved dragon kilns in China. Built during the Zhengde period of the Ming Dynasty, it has a history of over 500 years. The kiln fire has never been extinguished, earning it the titles of "living fossil of ceramics" and a Guinness World Record holder. The best time to visit is during spring and autumn (March-May and September-November), when the weather is mild and pleasant, perfect for outdoor activities and photography. A visit is recommended to last approximately 3-5 hours.
The most recommended way to get there is by taking Foshan Metro Line 2 to Shiwan Station, exiting from Exit D, and walking for about 5 to 8 minutes to reach the scenic area. This is the simplest and fastest method. If you are coming from Guangzhou city, you can first take the Guangfo Line metro to Zumiao Station or Tongji Road Station, then transfer to bus routes 109, 120, 137, or 155, and get off at "Nanfeng Ancient Kiln Station," from where it's a short walk. For those driving, you can navigate directly to "Nanfeng Ancient Kiln Parking Lot" or "Nanfeng Ancient Kiln P2 Ground Parking Lot," where there is a paid parking lot costing approximately 5 yuan per hour. The main activities include visiting the 500-year-old dragon kiln site, strolling along the ancient cobblestone streets, watching traditional pottery making demonstrations, and trying your hand at pottery throwing or sculpting at the pottery center. You can also explore the Ming and Qing dynasty architectural complex, visit the 400-year-old banyan tree, or browse the figurine street for affordable and adorable Shiwan figurines.
The scenic area is primarily characterized by cobblestone paths and stone steps. Walking trails are mostly old brick and stone surfaces. Some areas around the dragon kilns have uneven surfaces and numerous stairs; it is recommended to wear comfortable, non-slip flat shoes and avoid slippery sections during rainy weather. A visitor service center is located at the entrance, offering free luggage storage and official guide services (approximately 30 RMB/visit). Major facilities include restrooms, parking, and Wi-Fi coverage. For dining, there are a few restaurants and snack stalls (offering Lingnan snacks such as congee and blind man's cakes), but the selection is limited and prices are relatively high. It is recommended to bring your own water and snacks. For shopping, there is a dedicated ceramic gift shop, and you can also browse the various ceramic shops in the figurine street. The selection is very diverse, ranging from small ceramic refrigerator magnets and keychains to exquisite Shiwan figurines and art ornaments. In addition, the scenic area has a pottery center offering DIY pottery experiences such as wheel throwing (approximately 100 RMB/session) and pottery painting (approximately 50 RMB/session). After completion, the pottery can be fired and mailed home as a meaningful souvenir.
