Overview
Orange Isle is a long, narrow sandbar in the center of the Xiangjiang River in Changsha, Hunan Province. It is a national 5A-level tourist attraction and is open to the public free of charge. The one-way distance from the entrance to the sculpture of young Mao Zedong at the tip of the isle is about 3 kilometers, and walking back and forth is very time-consuming. Taking the scenic train is highly recommended (round-trip ticket price is about 40 yuan).
The best time to visit is spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November), when the weather is pleasant and the scenery is beautiful. Summer is hot, so please take precautions against sunburn. It is recommended to enter the park early in the morning (before 8:00 AM) to avoid crowds, and bring bottled water and comfortable shoes suitable for long walks.
How to Get There
The most convenient and quickest way to get to Orange Isle is to take Metro Line 2 to "Orange Isle Station" (Exit 1 or 2 leads directly to the scenic area entrance). Please note that the Orange Isle Bridge may have traffic restrictions during holidays, so taking a taxi or bus to the scenic area is not recommended.
Once inside the scenic area, it is recommended to purchase a ticket for the sightseeing train to save energy. A recommended route is: take the train directly to the final stop, "Wentiantai Station" (where the young Mao Zedong sculpture is located), and visit the sculpture, Wangjiang Pavilion, and Wentiantai at the head of the isle. On the return trip, you can freely hop on and off the train at any of the stops along the route, visiting attractions such as the Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall (closed on Mondays) and the Poetry Stele.
What to Expect
The walking routes across Orange Isle are relatively flat, and the main tourist route is fully equipped with accessible ramps. Dedicated accessible entrances are located at all entrances and key attractions, allowing wheelchairs and strollers to pass through without hindrance. There are ample and well-maintained restrooms throughout the park, equipped with toilet paper and hand sanitizer. The visitor center (near the subway exit) offers free wheelchair, cane, and stroller rentals year-round. Drinking fountains, convenience stores, and several simple restaurants are also available within the park, eliminating the need for visitors to bring large quantities of drinking water.
Practical Tips
- If you need free admission for the boat tour, you can inquire about purchasing tickets on-site. Tickets are required for passengers over 1.2 meters tall.
- Other attractions are also available within the scenic area; you can purchase tickets as needed.
- It can be combined with other Changsha attractions such as Yuelu Mountain and Taiping Old Street for a day trip.
- The scenic area's sightseeing buses offer guided tours; group tours can be purchased together.
