Yuelu Mountain, located on the west bank of the Xiang River in Changsha, is one of the seventy-two peaks of Hengshan Mountain in the south, combining natural scenery with a thousand-year-old cultural heritage. The mountain boasts numerous historical sites, including Yuelu Academy, one of China's oldest academies, the Aiwan Pavilion (famous for its scenic beauty at dusk amidst maple leaves), the ancient Lushan Temple, and Yunlu Palace. The mountain is not high; a 45-60 minute walk is sufficient to reach the summit, offering panoramic views of the Xiang River and the city of Changsha. The scenic area is open year-round free of charge, and a visit of 3-4 hours is recommended. Autumn (September to November) is the best time to visit, when the mountain is ablaze with vibrant red leaves from late November to early December, creating a truly enchanting scene.
To reach the East Gate (cable car access point), take Metro Line 2 or 4 to "Yingwanzhen Station," exit from Exit 3, and walk approximately 200 meters. To reach the South Gate (the area with the most cultural attractions), take Metro Line 4 to "Hunan University Station." Alternatively, you can take bus routes 132, 202, Lishan Special Line, or Tourist Route 1, among others. We recommend entering from the South Gate and exiting from the East Gate. Enter from the South Gate (near Hunan University Station), walk to visit Dongfanghong Square, Yuelu Academy (admission fee 40 RMB), and Aiwan Pavilion, then take the sightseeing bus (20 RMB one way, approximately 10-15 minutes) up the mountain for panoramic views of Changsha. Finally, take the cable car (50 RMB up, approximately 15 minutes) down from the East Gate. This route is easy and avoids backtracking.
Mount Yuelu is only 300 meters above sea level, making it relatively easy to climb. The mountain trails are mostly paved and have steps, and are clean and tidy, with rest pavilions and numerous signs along the way. Restrooms are available at both the top and bottom of the mountain. At the summit, there are charming snack shops and beverage stores for supplies, and the sightseeing corridor also offers tea and relaxation areas. Gift shops are mainly concentrated near the Yuelu Academy at the foot of the mountain. Some sections of the South Gate walking trail are quite steep; those with knee problems are advised to take a vehicle up the mountain or hike only if their physical condition allows.
