The Xi'an City Wall is the largest and best-preserved ancient city wall in China, located in the city center. It stretches approximately 13.7 kilometers and a tour typically takes 1-4 hours. The best time to visit is during spring and autumn, when the weather is pleasant; specifically, the evening is ideal, offering the chance to enjoy both a magnificent sunset and a dazzling night view.
How to Get There
The most convenient way to get to Xi'an City Wall is to take Metro Line 2 to Yongningmen Station. Exit from the South Exit, which leads directly to the main entrance (South Gate). Once on the wall, the classic route is to rent a bicycle (approximately 45 yuan/3 hours) and cycle clockwise from Yongningmen. This takes about 1.5 hours to complete the 13.74-kilometer loop, offering panoramic views of the ancient city. If time is limited, you can choose to walk from the South Gate to Hanguangmen and visit the free Hanguangmen Relics Museum to see a section of the Tang Dynasty city wall. Currently, 17 entrances to the city wall are open, including Yongningmen, Changlemen, and Andingmen. You can choose the one closest to you based on your itinerary.
What to Expect
The top of Xi'an City Wall is wide and flat (12-14 meters wide), with neatly paved walkways made of blue bricks, making it ideal for strolling or cycling. There are multiple entrances throughout the city, including an accessible elevator inside Hanguang Gate, allowing visitors with mobility issues to easily ascend the wall. Several souvenir shops and beverage stalls are located along the way, but there aren't many shops overall. Some of the smaller shops are very friendly, offering a place to rest or cool off even if you don't buy anything.
