Qinghai Lake is China's largest inland saltwater lake, meaning "blue sea" in Tibetan. Its surface elevation is approximately 3,196 meters. The best time to visit is from June to October each year, with tens of thousands of acres of rapeseed flowers blooming along the lake shore in July and August, creating a breathtaking spectacle of golden flowers reflecting in the azure water. In January and February, the spectacular blue ice phenomenon can be seen.
Qinghai Lake is about 150 kilometers from Xining, the provincial capital, and is easily accessible. By plane: Fly to Xining Caojiabao Airport, then take a chartered car or bus; the journey takes about 2.5 hours. By train/high-speed rail: Take the bullet train to Xining Station, then take a chartered car or tourist bus. By long-distance bus: A special bus departs daily from Xining Passenger Transport Center Station to Erlangjian Scenic Area at 8:30 AM, taking about 2.5 hours one way, costing 60 yuan per person. The return trip takes 3 hours, with a round-trip ticket costing 120 yuan. Tickets can be purchased at physical ticket windows or through the "Hehuang Smart Travel" WeChat platform. By chartered car: Chartering a car from Xining costs approximately 500-800 yuan per day, offering flexible routes and the opportunity to visit nearby attractions such as Ta'er Monastery and Chaka Salt Lake. You can take a sightseeing boat, stroll along the boardwalk, watch the sunrise at Heimahe, or spend 4 days cycling or driving along the 360-kilometer lakeside highway to fully experience the unique charm of this "plateau sapphire."
The core scenic area of Qinghai Lake is the Erlangjian Scenic Area, which features well-maintained sightseeing boardwalks and a boat dock. The paths are gentle and the hiking difficulty is low. There are chain restaurants such as KFC and BaWangChaJi within the scenic area, and the restrooms are clean and provide free tissues. Other viewpoints, such as Heimahe, Fairy Bay, and the Cliff, have simpler facilities and are primarily natural, with some sections being dirt roads. Small shops are available nearby for food and drinks. It is recommended to bring your own sunscreen and drinking water, respect the local Tibetan culture and ecological environment, and avoid trampling on the grasslands.
