Overview
Xianggong Mountain is located on the west bank of the Li River in Xingping Town, Yangshuo County, Guilin; it derives its name from the mountain's resemblance to the official headwear of an ancient prime minister. It offers a prime vantage point for a panoramic view of the "First Bend of the Li River," where one can take in the magnificent scenery of the winding river and the surrounding array of peaks. A wooden viewing platform at the summit provides a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts, especially at sunrise when golden light bathes the river and the forest of peaks. The ascent involves a stone staircase of over 500 steps, taking approximately 15–20 minutes to reach the top.
The best time to visit is at sunrise (around 5:30–6:00 AM in summer and 6:30–7:00 AM in winter). March offers misty, atmospheric views reminiscent of an ink-wash painting, while September and October feature beautiful golden rice paddies. As the summit viewing platform faces east, it is suitable for viewing the sunrise but not the sunset. A visit typically lasts 1–2 hours.
How to Get There
There are currently no direct public buses to Xianggong Mountain; the main ways to get there are as follows:
Ridesharing/Special Shuttle (Highly Recommended): Departing from hotels in Yangshuo West Street, the sunrise shuttle leaves around 4:30 AM. The cost is approximately 75–90 RMB per person (including the entrance ticket and round-trip transfers). You can book in advance via travel platforms for a hassle-free experience.
Chartered Car: A round-trip chartered car from Yangshuo costs about 400–600 RMB per vehicle, making it a suitable option for groups of 4–6 people.
Water Route + Shuttle: Take a ferry (approx. 5 RMB) from Xingping Wharf across the river to Dahebei Village, then transfer to a local sightseeing shuttle (approx. 20-minute ride; round-trip fare is about 40 RMB) to reach the foot of the mountain.
Recommended Itinerary: Depart from Yangshuo early in the morning → Arrive at Xianggong Mountain in about 1 hour → Hike up (15–20 minutes) to the summit for the sunrise → Spend about 1 hour sightseeing and taking photos at the top → After descending, continue your tour by visiting Xingping Ancient Town or Nine-Horse Fresco Hill.
What to Expect
The hiking trail consists of over 500 stone steps equipped with handrails, though some sections are quite steep. A five-story wooden observation deck stands at the summit; the top level offers the most expansive view, allowing for a 360-degree panorama of the Li River landscape. The deck features benches and shaded areas. Restrooms are located near the scenic area entrance; the observation deck situated close to them also offers good views and tends to be less crowded. Prices at the summit are high, so it is advisable to bring your own water and snacks. There are no gift shops within the scenic area, so any shopping should be done outside.
Practical Tips
- On rainy days, clouds and mist may completely obscure the view, detracting from the sightseeing experience; conversely, the period just after the rain clears offers the highest probability of seeing a sea of clouds.
- It is advisable to bring a light jacket for warmth, even in summer, and to take sun protection measures.
- Stone steps are slippery when wet; anti-slip shoes ensure safety.
