Overview
The Yungang Grottoes, located about 16 kilometers west of Datong City, Shanxi Province, are a World Heritage Site and one of China's three major grottoes. Carved during the Northern Wei Dynasty, they currently contain 45 main caves and over 50,000 stone sculptures.
A full tour takes approximately 3 to 4 hours; for a more in-depth visit (including the museum), it is recommended to allow 4 to 5 hours. The best time to visit is on weekday mornings during spring and autumn. It is suggested to arrive at the scenic area before 8:00 AM to avoid the peak tour group hours after 10:00 AM.
How to Get There
There are several ways to get to the Yungang Grottoes from Datong city:
【Public Transportation】The most convenient is Tourist Bus Route 603, which goes directly from Datong South Railway Station to the scenic area. The journey takes about 40 minutes and costs approximately 10 yuan. Alternatively, you can take Bus Route 3, which costs 2 yuan.
【Taxi/Ride-hailing】The journey from Datong Ancient City to the scenic area takes about 25-30 minutes and costs approximately 35-50 yuan one way.
【Airport】A taxi ride from Datong Yungang Airport takes about 40 minutes.
Recommended tour route: Tan Yao Square → Buddhist Worship Avenue → Lingyan Temple → Core area of the grottoes (Caves 1-45) → Yungang Grottoes Museum → Exit. Must-see caves include Cave 20 (the open-air Buddha, a symbol of Yungang), Cave 5 (the tallest Buddha statue at 17 meters), Cave 6 (the most exquisitely carved "First Great Cave of Yungang"), and Cave 12 (the music cave).
What to Expect
The scenic area is primarily accessible by foot, with flat paths and stone steps as the main routes. Some caves have steep stone steps, so comfortable, non-slip shoes are recommended. The scenic area has accessible pathways and restrooms for wheelchair users. Restrooms are located near the entrance, the cave complex, and the souvenir shop. The visitor center offers luggage storage; a souvenir shop and food street are located at the exit; and there are also multiple drinking fountains throughout the scenic area.
Practical Tips
- Tickets are not sold on-site. Reservations must be made 1 to 7 days in advance through the "Yungang Research Institute" WeChat mini-program or authorized platform using real names. Same-day tickets cannot be reserved.
- Foreign tourists enter the park through Gate 3 with their passports.
- Flash photography is strictly prohibited inside the caves: flash photography can damage the millennia-old murals and stone carvings, and violations may result in fines; touching the stone carvings is also prohibited.
