No. 18, Shifo South Road, Wuzhen, Tongxiang City, Jiaxing City, Zhejiang Province
Wuzhen, located in Tongxiang City, Zhejiang Province, boasts a history of over a thousand years and has perfectly preserved the Jiangnan water town landscape from the Ming and Qing dynasties, earning it the reputation of "China's last water town." The scenic area is divided into two main sections: East Gate and West Gate. It is recommended to allocate at least one day for a visit. The best time to visit is from March to May (when the Jiangnan region is shrouded in mist and rain, and the weather is pleasant) and from September to November (when the autumn air is crisp and the osmanthus blossoms are fragrant). In the morning, you can visit East Gate to experience the original ecological water town life and visit attractions such as Mao Dun's former residence and the blue-dyed cloth workshop. In the afternoon, head to West Gate to admire the ancient bridges and flowing water. In the evening, experience a night cruise on a traditional rowing boat, where the lights on both banks are reflected on the water – a must-do experience in Wuzhen. West Gate is open until 10:00 PM, and the night view is enchanting. Comfortable flat shoes are recommended for exploring the cobblestone streets.
The most convenient way to get there from Shanghai or Hangzhou is to take the high-speed train to Tongxiang Station (approximately 1.5 hours from Shanghai, 1 hour from Hangzhou). After exiting the station, take bus K282 directly to Wuzhen Bus Station (approximately 40-50 minutes, fare 5 yuan), then transfer to bus K350 to either Xizha or Dongzha Scenic Area (approximately 15 minutes, fare 2 yuan). There are also direct buses from Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport or Shanghai Pudong Airport to Wuzhen (approximately 2.5 hours). Driving from Shanghai or Hangzhou takes about 1.5 hours. Parking is available in the scenic area; a fee of 10 yuan is charged for up to 6 hours. You can search for "Wuzhen Xizha Parking Lot" on your navigation app. Wuzhen is divided into two main scenic areas: Dongzha and Xizha. A free shuttle bus runs between the two areas (7:40-17:00, approximately every 20-40 minutes). Within Xizha, you can take a sightseeing bus (5 yuan/person) or a traditional rowing boat. Recommended itinerary: In the morning, first visit Dongzha (opens at 7:00 AM), including Mao Dun's Former Residence, the Jiangnan Hundred Beds Museum, Hongyuantai Dyehouse, and Hanlindi Shadow Puppet Show. In the afternoon, move to Xizha, visiting attractions such as Caomushense Dyehouse, Muxin Art Museum (closed on Mondays), Zhaoming Academy, and Wuzhen Old Post Office. In the evening, climb the White Lotus Pagoda for a panoramic view of the ancient town. You can also experience a nighttime rowing boat tour (60 RMB/person for shared boat) to admire the enchanting night view of lights reflected on the water.
Most of Wuzhen Scenic Area features flat, bluestone-paved walkways, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Comfortable flat shoes are recommended. The scenic area offers comprehensive facilities and services. The service center provides free luggage storage and free rental of strollers and wheelchairs (200 RMB deposit, 2 hours free use). Convenience stores, gift shops, and specialty snack stalls are available within the scenic area, and luggage storage is also available at the West Gate entrance. In addition, the scenic area offers 18 thoughtful free services, including free drinking water stations, free shuttle boats (9:00-17:00, approximately every 25 minutes), and free tea. A volunteer center is also available to assist visitors in need.
