Overview
Located on the shores of Dianchi Lake, about 15 kilometers from the city center, Kunming's Xishan (Western Hills) Scenic Area—also known as "Sleeping Beauty Mountain"—features a mountain range stretching over 40 kilometers that offers panoramic views of the vast Dianchi Lake. The scenic area is open from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, and a visit typically takes 3 to 5 hours.
The best time to visit is between March and October, covering spring, summer, and autumn. Spring offers the chance to admire magnolias and camellias; summer (June–August) features lush forests and pleasant average temperatures of 20–28°C, making it a natural summer retreat; and autumn (September–November) boasts excellent visibility over Dianchi Lake, offering the most spectacular scenery.
How to Get There
The most convenient way to get there is by taking Metro Line 3 to Xishan Park Station; from Exit A, it is about a 10-minute walk to the scenic area entrance. Alternatively, you can take bus route 94 or 51 to Gaoyao Station. A taxi ride from the city center costs approximately 25–35 yuan, or you can drive and navigate to the Chama Huajie Parking Lot (10 yuan per visit).
The highlight is the Dragon Gate Grottoes (Longmen Grottoes), a complex carved into sheer cliffs by Qing Dynasty artisans over the course of 72 years; from the top, visitors can enjoy a 270-degree panoramic view of Dianchi Lake. There are various ways to explore the site: you can hike the entire way up, or enjoy a more leisurely tour by taking the cable car or the scenic area shuttle bus.
What to Expect
The walking paths in the Western Hills Scenic Area consist primarily of stone steps; as some sections are quite steep, wearing non-slip athletic shoes is recommended. Public restrooms are available within the scenic area, and refreshment stalls selling drinking water and snacks can be found along the route. At the foot of the mountain, the "Tea-Horse Flower Street" features gift shops and numerous stalls offering Yunnan specialties. Transportation options include electric shuttle buses (10 RMB one-way), a cable car (40 RMB one-way from Tea-Horse Flower Street to Longmen), and a cross-Dianchi Lake cable car (60 RMB one-way).
Practical Tips
- Kunming is located on a high plateau where ultraviolet radiation is very strong; you should take sun protection measures even on cloudy days.
- Visitor numbers are high on weekends and public holidays, and wait times for the cable car and electric shuttle bus can be long; it is recommended to arrive at the scenic area before 8:30 AM.
- Prices for drinking water and food within the scenic area are higher than in the city center; it is recommended to bring sufficient water and some snacks.
- Entry to the Longmen core area closes at 16:30. The cable car and scenic area shuttle buses operate on fixed schedules; please plan your descent in advance to avoid missing the last service.
