Overview
Gongtan Ancient Town, located in Youyang County, Chongqing, sits at the confluence of the Wujiang and Apengjiang Rivers. With a history of approximately 1800 years, it is known as the "Pearl of the Wujiang Gallery." It is famous for its 3-kilometer-long cobblestone street, uniquely shaped cliffside stilted buildings, and distinctive firewalls, making it one of the best-preserved Ming and Qing dynasty architectural complexes in China.
A half-day visit is recommended. The best time to visit is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), when the weather is pleasant and the scenery is at its peak.
How to Get There
You can take a train from Chongqing North Railway Station to Youyang Station (approximately 5 hours), then transfer to a bus to Gongtan Ancient Town (approximately 1.5-2 hours, ticket price approximately 20-25 yuan). Alternatively, take a long-distance bus from Chongqing Nanping Sijiang Bus Station to Youyang County, then transfer to another bus to Gongtan. Waterway: Another more scenic route is to first go to Pengshui County, then take a boat from Pengshui Wanzu Wharf upstream along the Wujiang River directly to Gongtan, enjoying the scenic beauty of the Wujiang Gallery along the way.
Suggested Itinerary: Upon arrival, enter the ancient town from either the North or South Gate and stroll along the main stone-paved street, visiting historical sites such as the Xiqin Guild Hall, Ran Family Courtyard, and Chuanzhu Temple, experiencing Tujia culture. Afterwards, head to the riverside wharf and take a cruise on the Wujiang Gallery (approximately 1-2 hours), enjoying panoramic views of the ancient town and canyon scenery from the water.
What to Expect
The interior of Gongtan Ancient Town is primarily paved with bluestone slabs. While the surfaces are flat, some areas are slippery, and numerous staircases connect the upper and lower levels of the town. Comfortable, non-slip athletic shoes are recommended. Basic facilities are readily available, with restrooms and clear signage along the main streets. The old town street features many gift shops and specialty snack stalls selling local handicrafts and products such as mung bean noodles and Gongtan dried tofu. Major attractions, such as the Xiqin Guild Hall and Ran Family Courtyard, require separate tickets.
Practical Tips
- Wear shoes with good grip — the old stone streets can be slick after rain, and many alleys involve steps rather than level pavement.
- Besides river delicacies, Gongtan stuffed tofu, Tujia cured pork, mung bean noodles, and sweet potato noodles are all worth trying. Restaurant prices are reasonable.
- The ancient town consists mostly of old wooden buildings; please refrain from graffiti, loud noise, or vandalism. Please cherish this precious heritage.
- There are different routes and types of boats available for cruises, so be sure to ask about the time and price in advance.
