Overview
Ideal Resort is perched on a cliff overlooking Erhai Lake on the eastern shore of the lake in Dali. It's a creative resort town that blends Mediterranean Santorini-style blue and white architecture with the stunning scenery of Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake. The pure white, terraced buildings cascade down the mountainside, with arched doorways and succulent plant displays creating a charming contrast.
A 2-3 hour visit is recommended. The best time to visit is on a sunny day for optimal light and shadow effects; ideally, visit before 10:00 AM or after 4:00 PM to enjoy softer light and avoid the midday crowds.
How to Get There
From Dali Old Town: A taxi ride costs approximately 40-50 yuan and takes 30-40 minutes; for self-driving, navigate to "Ideal Land Tourist Resort Town," and the scenery along the East Ring Road is picturesque. From Dali Railway Station/Xiaguan City: The journey takes approximately 20-30 minutes; you can also take the "Xiaguan-Haidong Bus Line" and get off at Nanqichang Village Station, from which it's within walking distance. From Dali Airport: The journey takes approximately 20 minutes. Self-driving tourists can park in the parking lot opposite the town for approximately 10 yuan per visit.
For sightseeing, we recommend wandering aimlessly along the white steps and winding paths, where every turn offers a stunning panoramic view of Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake; in the evening, you can climb to the top to watch the sunset, and the illuminated cliffs at night create a different kind of romance.
What to Expect
Ideal Town is built on a hillside, and exploration mainly involves winding stone steps and slopes, requiring a lot of walking and climbing stairs. There are several public restrooms throughout the town, located in the main tourist areas. Numerous cafes and restaurants offer dining and relaxation options. Access to the observation decks of some cliffside hotels and cafes requires the purchase of afternoon tea. The town also features gift shops and creative workshops where you can purchase local handicrafts such as tie-dye. Overall, the facilities are generally well-developed, but as a mountain town, those with mobility issues should be aware of the numerous steps.
Practical Tips
- Some popular photo spots within the scenic area have been fenced off by businesses that charge admission fees. For example, entry to the mountaintop viewing platform requires a purchase of a drink costing over 68 yuan.
- Ideal Land is located below the airport flight path; drones are prohibited from flying in the entire area. Please do not bring or use drones.
- There's no need to take the 10 yuan sightseeing bus at the entrance—it's about a 5-minute walk to the first intersection, and pedestrians have to wait until 10:00 to enter. Although there's no time limit for taking the bus, it's not cost-effective.
