Lion Grove Garden, one of the four famous gardens of Suzhou, was first built in the Yuan Dynasty (1342), boasting a history of nearly 700 years. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The garden is renowned for its massive artificial mountain complex made of Taihu stones, the largest and most complex ancient artificial mountain maze in China, earning it the title of "Kingdom of Artificial Mountains." A visit to Lion Grove Garden takes approximately 2-3 hours. The best time to visit is in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when the weather is mild and the scenery is at its most beautiful. The most distinctive feature of the garden is its artificial mountain maze—you can wander through its winding caves like a fun adventure. It is recommended to enter as early as 8:00 AM when the garden opens to avoid peak tour times and enjoy a more peaceful experience.
Transportation: Take Metro Line 4 to Beisi Pagoda Station, Exit 4, and walk for about 10 minutes; or take Metro Line 6 to Zhuozhengyuan/Suzhou Museum Station. By bus, take Tourist Bus 1, Tourist Bus 2, 301, 518, 55, or 178 to Lion Grove South or Lion Grove Station. From Suzhou Railway Station, transfer to Metro Line 2 to Pinghe Road or Line 4 to Sujin, then transfer to Line 6. Recommended Route: Entrance → Yanyu Hall → Lixue Hall → Zhibai Pavilion → Wenmei Pavilion → Zhengqi Pavilion → Anxiang Shuying Tower → Rockery Maze (Core Experience) → Zhenqu Pavilion → Nine Lion Peaks → Xiaofang Pavilion → Stone Boat → Exit. The entire tour takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. The rockery maze has 21 entrances and 9 paths; it is recommended to walk counter-clockwise to avoid getting lost.
The Lion Grove Garden's walking paths primarily consist of stone-paved paths and artificial rockery steps. The internal passageways within the rockery are narrow and the steps are uneven, so comfortable sneakers or flat shoes are recommended. Several restrooms are available within the garden.
