Overview
Lugu Lake, located on the plateau bordering Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, sits at an altitude of approximately 2,690 meters. Its crystal-clear, azure waters have earned it the title of "Pearl of the Plateau," and it is also known as the "Kingdom of Women in the East," inhabited by the Mosuo people, who possess a unique matriarchal social culture.
The best time to visit is from March to October each year. Spring (March-May) is a time of blooming flowers, autumn (September-November) offers clear skies and gentle breezes, and summer (June-August) is a time when the lake is covered in water hyacinths, each season offering its own unique scenery. A 2-3 day itinerary is recommended, allowing you to experience boat tours on the lake and visit islands, cycling around the lake or hiring a car, visiting Lige Peninsula and the Walking Marriage Bridge in the Grass Sea, and participating in a Mosuo bonfire party to deeply immerse yourself in the natural scenery and ethnic culture.
How to Get There
For those arriving at Lugu Lake from outside, the most recommended route is from Lijiang. You can take a direct bus from Lijiang Bus Station to Daluoshui Village, a journey of approximately 4-5 hours, costing around 70-90 yuan. This is a cost-effective and safe option. For more flexibility and comfort, you can choose to share a car or hire a private car, a journey of about 4 hours, costing approximately 200-300 yuan per person. For travelers with limited time, you can fly directly to Ninglang Lugu Lake Airport and then take the airport bus (approximately 1 hour) to the lake area. The loop around the lake within the scenic area is approximately 70 kilometers. You can choose to hire a car (approximately 300-500 yuan/day), rent an electric scooter (approximately 80 yuan/day), or a bicycle (approximately 30 yuan/day) to explore.
