Mogao Caves

The Mogao Caves, located in Dunhuang, Gansu Province, are the world's largest and best-preserved treasure trove of Buddhist art, renowned for their murals, painted sculptures, and cave architecture. The Mogao Caves operate on a fully online, real-name reservation system, requiring advance ticket purchase through the official website or WeChat mini-program. A full tour takes approximately 3 to 4 hours; adding special caves and exhibition halls will require 5 to 6 hours. The best time to visit is from May to June and from September to October, when the weather is comfortable and there is less wind and sand. During the off-season, there are fewer tourists and lower ticket prices, making it ideal for a more leisurely exploration; during the peak season in July and August, tickets should be booked a month in advance, and precautions against the heat should be taken.

To reach the Mogao Grottoes, you must first arrive in Dunhuang City, and then proceed to the "Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center." By air: You can fly directly to "Dunhuang Mogao International Airport" (DNH), which is approximately 13 kilometers from Dunhuang city center and 15 kilometers from the Mogao Grottoes. A taxi ride takes about 15 minutes and costs around 30 yuan. By train: You can choose "Dunhuang Station" (closer to the city center; a taxi ride from the station takes about 20 minutes; high-speed trains run along the line from Lanzhou, offering beautiful scenery along the way). By bus: From Dunhuang city center, you can take a circular tourist bus line with a fare of only 5 yuan, passing through the city center, the Mogao Grottoes Digital Center, the airport, and the train station—a highly efficient and economical journey. Upon arrival, please proceed to the "Mogao Grottoes Digital Exhibition Center" (do not drive directly to the grottoes). After watching the film, take the scenic area shuttle bus to enter the grottoes for your visit. Please remember: photography is strictly prohibited inside the grottoes, and bring your original passport for verification.

The Mogao Grottoes boasts a pleasant walkable environment, with gentle pathways connecting the caves and accessible ramps in all major areas. Restrooms throughout the grottoes are clearly marked, clean, and equipped with separate mother-and-baby rooms and accessible restrooms. Official gift shops are located in the Digital Exhibition Center and the grottoes, offering mural-themed souvenirs and local handicrafts. A post office is located within the exhibition hall, allowing you to mail postcards directly. Restaurants and beverage stations offer light meals, instant noodles, and apricot juice. The Digital Center also provides free Wi-Fi, mobile phone charging, and luggage storage. Please wear comfortable flat shoes when visiting. Northwest China experiences strong ultraviolet radiation and significant temperature differences between day and night; please bring a jacket and sunscreen.
