Yangguan Scenic Area, Yangguan Town, Dunhuang City, Jiuquan City, Gansu Province
Yangguan Pass, located approximately 70 kilometers southwest of Dunhuang City, Gansu Province, was first built during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty and was an important pass on the southern route of the ancient Silk Road. The famous line by the Tang Dynasty poet Wang Wei, "I urge you to drink another cup of wine, for beyond Yangguan there will be no old friends," has made it a representative site of frontier culture. The main attractions include the Yangguan Ruins (commonly known as "Antique Beach"), the Yangguan Beacon Tower, the Yangguan Museum, and a complex of Han-style buildings. Recommended visit duration: 3-5 hours. The best time to visit is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-October), avoiding the summer heat and winter cold. Springtime sees fewer tourists, allowing for a more immersive experience of the Gobi Desert scenery.
Yangguan Scenic Area is approximately 60-70 kilometers from Dunhuang city, about a 1-hour drive. The following transportation options are recommended: Customized Shuttle Bus (Recommended): Departs daily at 08:30 from Dunhuang Bus Station, directly to Yangguan Ruins (Yangguan Museum), with a 2-hour stop before continuing to Yumenguan. Return trip departs from Yumenguan back to the city at approximately 14:50. Round-trip fare is 120 RMB per person. Tickets can be purchased at the Dunhuang Bus Station ticket window or electronically through the 12306 mini-program. Direct Shuttle Bus: Departs daily at 08:00 from Dunhuang city, passing through Western Thousand Buddha Caves, Yangguan, Yumenguan, and Yadan National Geological Park. Chartered Car/Taxi: Charter a car from Dunhuang city. You can arrange your own itinerary. Vehicle type and price vary depending on the number of people. Suggested itinerary: After entering the scenic area, first visit the Yangguan Museum to learn about its history, then go to the Duwei Mansion to experience an antique-style travel document. Afterwards, take a sightseeing bus to the Yangguan Beacon Tower to enjoy panoramic views of the Gobi Desert. You can also participate in activities such as archery, horseback riding, and camel riding.
The scenic area's roads are mainly flat trails and Gobi gravel roads. Visiting museums and exhibition halls is primarily done via gentle walking paths. Access to Yangguan Beacon Tower can be made on foot or by sightseeing bus. The scenic area provides basic facilities such as restrooms, a gift shop, a guided tour service, and rest areas. The gift shop offers Silk Road-themed souvenirs and unique gifts such as travel permits. The sun is strong and the air is dry; please be sure to prepare for sun protection and hydration.
