Yumen Pass

Yumen Pass, located in the Gobi Desert about 80 kilometers northwest of Dunhuang City, is a core area of ​​the "Silk Road: Chang'an-Tianshan Corridor" World Cultural Heritage site. It comprises a Han Dynasty military defense system consisting of "one pass and two cities" (Xiaofangpan City and Dafangpan City) and the ruins of the Han Great Wall. A visit is recommended to take 1.5 to 2 hours. The best time to visit is from May to October, when the weather is mild and the sunsets are particularly spectacular. Spring (March to May) sees fewer tourists and offers better value for money; July and August are peak season with more visitors.

There are three main ways to get to Yumenguan from Dunhuang: ① Direct shuttle bus (most convenient): Departs daily from Dunhuang Bus Station at 8:30 AM. Round-trip fare is 120 RMB per person (excluding entrance fee). The bus passes Yangguan Ruins and arrives at Yumenguan around 11:20 AM. The return trip departs at 2:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased at the bus station window or through the "12306" mini-program. ② Chartered car or taxi: Approximately 1.5 hours from the city center. Suitable for flexible travel schedules, allowing you to combine a visit to Yumenguan with the Western Thousand Buddha Caves, Yangguan, and Yadan National Geological Park. ③ By car: Drive northwest along National Highway G215 for approximately 90 kilometers. Free parking and charging stations are available at the scenic area. The tour combines hiking and sightseeing bus rides. It is recommended to rent an audio guide or hire a guide (150 yuan for 1-10 people). Follow the "Han" flag, pass through the pass, and climb the viewing platform to overlook the Shule River and feel the desolate atmosphere of "Spring breeze does not reach Yumen Pass".

The scenic area boasts well-developed facilities. The visitor center offers services such as information, free drinking water, wheelchair and stroller rentals, luggage storage, a mother-and-baby room, and a medical room. The walking trails are primarily wooden boardwalks and paved surfaces, with accessible pathways and "Caution: Steps" signs prominently displayed. A cultural and creative gift shop sells unique products such as bamboo slip bookmarks and beacon tower models. The park also features intelligent guide robots and digital experience projects. 5G signal coverage is available throughout the area, and parking lots are equipped with charging stations, generally meeting the needs of most visitors.
