Pingjiang Road

Pingjiang Road is the best-preserved historical district in Suzhou's ancient city. Originally built in the Song Dynasty, it boasts over 800 years of history. The cobblestone road stretches along the river, with traditional white-walled, black-tiled houses on both banks and the quietly flowing water creating a typical Jiangnan water town scene. Strolling along, you can see wooden boats gently gliding across the river (approximately 40 RMB per person), and along the way, you'll find teahouses, storytelling venues, and various small shops. The best time to visit is spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November), when the weather is mild, and spring brings cherry blossoms and crabapple blossoms, while autumn offers osmanthus and ginkgo trees, making for the most poetic scenery.

Take Metro Line 1 to Xiangmen Station, exit from Exit 3, and walk approximately 400 meters to reach the south entrance of Pingjiang Road. From Suzhou Railway Station, take Metro Line 4 to Leqiao Station, then transfer to Line 1 to Xiangmen Station or Lindun Road Station. Several other metro stations are also available near Pingjiang Road, including Leqiao Station (Line 4), Beisita Station (Line 4), and Lindun Road Station (Line 6). By bus: Take bus routes 2, 32, 146, 261, 529, etc., and get off at stops such as Xiangmen, Cufangqiao, and Guanqianjie East. From there, it's about a 5-7 minute walk. Recommended time: 2-4 hours. The entire route from south to north is approximately 2-3 kilometers, perfect for strolling, exploring, and sampling local snacks. Besides exploring the main street, consider wandering into the side alleys like Daru Lane to listen to Suzhou Pingtan (approximately 30-50 RMB, including tea) and deeply experience the daily life rhythm of old Suzhou.

Pingjiang Road's main street is paved primarily with bluestone slabs, stretching approximately 1600 meters. The surface is generally flat and suitable for walking, although some sections have slightly uneven slabs; comfortable flat shoes or sneakers are recommended. Public restrooms are located at regular intervals along the street. Numerous gift shops and cultural and creative stores line both sides of the road, selling Suzhou-style handicrafts such as Suzhou embroidery, silk fans, paper cuttings, and tea sets, as well as popular shops like the Cat's Sky City concept bookstore. Pingjiang Road is open 24 hours a day and free of charge. Several teahouses, cafes, and restaurants are also located along the street, providing opportunities for rest and relaxation.
