Qili Shantang

Qili Shantang, with a history of 1200 years, is hailed as "Suzhou's No. 1 Street." Stretching approximately 3600 meters (about seven li), it features a parallel waterway and street layout, making it an excellent place to experience the idyllic scenery of "small bridges, flowing water, and traditional houses" in Jiangnan. A visit of 2 to 3 hours is recommended. The best seasons to visit are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is mild and comfortable. The best time to visit is from afternoon to evening—arriving around 3 or 4 pm allows for a triple experience: the daytime street scenery, the sunset's blue hues, and the evening lights coming on. A night boat tour is highly recommended; the red lanterns reflected on the water and the flickering lights of the ancient houses on both banks offer a truly immersive experience of Qili Shantang's soul.

Transportation: Take Metro Line 2 to "Shantang Street Station," exit from Exit 1 or 3. From Suzhou Railway Station, it's only two metro stops, about 20 minutes, perfect for a short trip. Buses include routes 7, 32, 501, 31, 34, 204, and 304, stopping at either "Shantang Street" or "Shangtang Street Station." Enter the scenic area from Xinmin Bridge → Chamber of Commerce Museum → Ancient Stage (Pingtan performance) → Tonggui Bridge (best photo spot) → Yuhan Hall → Haishi Shantang (free night view from the 4th-floor terrace) → Bai Juyi Wharf (night cruise) → Exit at Shantang Bridge. The entire trip takes approximately 2-3 hours. Tonggui Bridge is the most representative ancient bridge on Shantang Street; its lights reflected on the water at night make it a must-see for photos. The ancient stage regularly hosts Pingtan and Kunqu Opera performances, where you can sit and listen to the soft Suzhou dialect.

Qili Shantang Main Street is primarily a bluestone-paved pedestrian walkway. The surface is flat but slightly slippery in rainy weather, so comfortable, non-slip flat shoes are recommended; avoid high heels. The street is open 24 hours a day free of charge, except for some individual attractions (such as Yuhantang and the Chamber of Commerce Museum), which are open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Several public restrooms are available along the street. Both sides of the main street are lined with numerous Suzhou embroidery gift shops, cultural and creative bookstores, and silk craft shops. A visitor center is located near Xinmin Bridge on the east side, offering free luggage storage for 3 hours. Wheelchair users should note that some sections of the stone pavement are slightly uneven, but generally passable. Mosquitoes are plentiful in summer, so it is recommended to bring mosquito repellent. During holidays, the area becomes very crowded; it is advisable to visit during off-peak hours for a better experience.
