Two days covers the main experience. Use one day for the historic center, temples, and old streets, then a second day for museums, the city wall, or a longer food-focused route. Three days works well if you want to add a side trip or leave more time for local neighborhoods.
Kaifeng's strongest appeal is its connection to the Song dynasty and the way older traditions remain part of the modern city. Read a little about the city's history before arrival, then use museums and historic sites to put the streets into context.
Do not build the itinerary entirely around a single reconstructed attraction. Combine major landmarks with ordinary streets, morning markets, and a local meal. This creates a more balanced visit and helps avoid spending the whole day moving between ticketed sites.

Food & Dining Guide
Kaifeng is known for soup dumplings, sesame flatbreads, noodles, braised dishes, and other Henan-style foods. Soup dumplings are best eaten carefully: take a small bite first and let the hot broth cool before drinking it.
Look for established local restaurants as well as morning markets. Tourist streets can be convenient for sampling several snacks, but neighborhood restaurants often provide a better sense of everyday food culture. Order gradually and ask about portion sizes when sharing.
Check current menus and prices locally, especially in busy historic areas and during festivals.
Getting There & Around
Kaifeng is commonly reached by high-speed rail from Zhengzhou and other cities in central China. Check the exact railway station and onward transfer before booking accommodation because the station area is separate from the historic center.
Taxis and ride-hailing are useful for connecting the railway station with central hotels. Within the historic districts, walking, bicycles, and short local rides can work well, but attractions are not all next door.
If you are combining Kaifeng with Zhengzhou or Luoyang, compare train schedules before fixing the order. Leave extra time around holiday periods and major cultural events.
