The Master of the Nets Garden, originally built in the Southern Song Dynasty, is hailed as the "ultimate example of a small garden" and is one of Suzhou's most representative small-to-medium-sized classical gardens. Spanning only about half a hectare, it is renowned for its exquisite and compact design, creating a miniature landscape within a small space. A daytime visit takes approximately 1.5 to 3 hours; it is recommended to enter as soon as the garden opens at 7:30 AM, when there are fewer people, the light is softer, and the reflection in the Rainbow Pond is at its most beautiful. In addition to daytime visits, evening tours of the garden offer opportunities to enjoy traditional performances such as Kunqu Opera, Suzhou storytelling, and guqin (a seven-stringed zither), providing an immersive experience of the garden's nighttime scenery.
Take Metro Line 5 to "Nanyuan North Road Station," Exit 4, and walk approximately 8 minutes to reach the South Gate. Alternatively, take bus routes 529, 202, or 931 to "Wangshi Garden Station," and walk about 2 minutes from there. Driving to the old town is not recommended due to limited parking. Recommended one-day itinerary: Main Gate → Sedan Chair Hall → Wanjuantang → Xiexiu Tower → Caixia Pond → Yuedaofenglai Pavilion → Yinjing Bridge → Dianchun Pavilion → Kansong Duhua Pavilion → Exit. A full visit takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. If time permits, consider entering in the afternoon and visiting the Night Garden in the evening. Enjoy the exquisite garden during the day and experience Kunqu Opera and Pingtan at night – two completely different garden beauties in one visit.
The ground in the Master of the Nets Garden is mainly paved with bluestone slabs and flagstone paths. The surfaces can be slippery when wet, so it's recommended to wear non-slip flat shoes. The garden is relatively small, with attractions clustered together, and most areas are flat with few steps. Basic amenities such as restrooms, luggage storage, and Wi-Fi are available. Several gift shops are located in and around the garden, where you can purchase garden-themed souvenirs. Please note that there are currently no fully accessible pathways within the garden; those with mobility issues are advised to plan ahead or consult staff. In summer, there are many mosquitoes near the water, so it's recommended to bring mosquito repellent. When visiting the garden at night, be prepared for the cold.
