gourmet food
Shangrao cuisine is characterized by fresh, spicy, and rich flavors, with both its snacks and main dishes offering their own unique appeal.
Must-try snacks
Qianshan Scalded Rice Noodles. A signature breakfast dish from Shangrao, featuring smooth, fine rice noodles in a pork bone or chicken broth base, topped with a generous variety of ingredients (such as beef, beef offal, and pork liver).
Yiyang Rice Cakes. Made from pure rice, they do not turn mushy when boiled or stick to the pan when stir-fried, offering a springy, chewy texture.
Dengzhan Guo (Oil Lamp-Shaped Rice Cakes). A specialty snack featuring a steamed rice-batter shell shaped like a traditional oil lamp, filled with a rich mixture of ingredients such as shiitake mushrooms, bean sprouts, and fresh meat.
Hu Doufu (Braised Tofu Stew). A traditional specialty of Shangrao; diced tofu is simmered with ingredients such as stock, shrimp, minced meat, and shiitake mushrooms.
transportation
Shangrao's tourist attractions are scattered across several counties—such as Yushan, Wuyuan, Guangxin, and Qianshan—so planning your transportation is key to a smooth itinerary.
High-speed rail: Shangrao Station serves as the city's transportation hub, offering direct connections from Shanghai and Hangzhou in approximately 2–3 hours. Travelers heading to Mount Sanqingshan should disembark at Yushan South Station, while those bound for Wuyuan should use Wuyuan Station.
Air travel: Shangrao Sanqingshan Airport offers flights to cities such as Beijing, Sanya, and Harbin; however, flight frequency is limited. Consequently, most tourists choose to fly into Nanchang Changbei Airport and then take a high-speed train—a journey of about one hour—to Shangrao Station.
Direct tourist shuttles: Shangrao operates multiple direct shuttle routes connecting the high-speed rail station to key scenic areas, including Mount Sanqingshan, Guifeng, Mount Gexian, and Wangxian Valley.
Accommodation Area
Accommodation in Shangrao is primarily distributed across four areas; your specific choice depends on the main focus of your trip.
Xinzhou District (Urban Area): Convenient for transfers and offers plenty of dining options.
Wuyuan: Stay near Huangling or Jiangling; book in advance during peak season. If you prefer a quieter environment, choose accommodation 1–2 km outside the villages.
Mount Sanqing: Staying on the mountain is expensive and facilities are dated, but it offers easy access for sunrise viewing. Staying at the foot of the mountain offers better value; the areas near the Jinsha or Waishuangxi cableways are the most convenient.
Wangxian Valley: If your budget allows, stay at the cliffside guesthouses within the scenic area; otherwise, opt for accommodation outside the scenic area.
